I have to apologize for this weeks end. I had wanted to do a column on Japanese Idols, but that one’s going to take me a lot longer to get my thoughts in order. So with that I decided to end the weekend the way I started it, with a list of kick ass music. Enjoy this while working, or on summer break… you lucky bastard you.
Much like the OPs, EDs are a short music video to round out the show and play credits. This time around I decided to also give you the name of the song just in case you want to get it for yourself. If you’re looking to go legit, you can buy/download a surprising amount of anime music on sites like iTunes. If you’re like me and enjoy having a physical import copy though, you can always go to CD Japan. Anyway let’s start this off!
Cowboy Bebop – The Real Folk Blues
Much like Monday’s OP post, there has to be some Bebop in the mix. The real folk blues is a beautiful song on its own, but it’s even more impactful following some of the more heavy-hitting episodes of this show. The drab scenes depicted in the video add to the effect, completing the jazz feel of the show. It’s still seen as one of the best endings in anime today.
Love Live! School Idol Project – Donna Toki mo Zutto (Anytime, Anywhere)
Love Live is a show about idols, so it’s fitting that its ED song would be a very idol-esk affair. The lyrics are cheerful and about friendship, with a tempo that is upbeat to give you hope for the next episode. Did you catch that only one girl was singing? In the second season the ending theme was sung by different girls or groups of girls in almost every episode. I chose the Nico Yazawa (the girl at the start of the video) version of the song, because she’s clearly the best girl in the whole show! I’ll not hear otherwise!
K-On! – Don’t Say Lazy
With K-On being another music anime like Love Live, it’s understandable that it has a pretty good soundtrack as well. I’m a big fan of this ED, in part because the video is such a departure from the actual show. It’s very much like a music video which Mio (the vocals/bass) would never do. The song is pretty good as well, it’s one of the few EDs I almost never skip over! Then again I love all of the K-On soundtrack, so I might be biased.
Haganai NEXT – Bokura no Tsubasa (Our Wings)
Haganai (Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai) NEXT is the second season of the show, but I enjoyed the ED from this season more. There’s quite a bit of symbolism in this one that really speaks to the problems the two female leads have in communication. The mellow song kind of puts you in a chill mood, and that’s good since some of the episodes are ecchi as hell. Also the male protagonist is the typical super annoying harem main character type, who can’t make up his mind AT ALL! Clearly Sena is the best girl here! Shit, got off topic. Sorry.
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! – Inside Identity
Rounding out this kick ass 5 is the Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions) ED. While the video isn’t spectacular, I really love the song. A rock song like this is perfect for the craziness of Chu-2. Rikka’s dancing in the beginning is amusing, and very in character for her. After remembering this ED, I’m going to have to pick up the song somewhere as it is sadly missing from my anime playlist! It also kind of makes me want to re-watch this show… excuse me.
Again sorry for the light content this week, but it didn’t feel right putting out the article I wanted to without more research. Maybe I’ll get it done by Monday, but till then let me know what some of your favorite EDs are. Did you like any of these, and do any of them make you want to watch the anime they’re from? If you do want to watch these shows, I’ve put links below to the legit sites to go to. Have a great weekend, have a beer (or juice), and watch some anime. I know I will! Till next week…
Arigatō my fellow BrOtaku!
