Cutest Characters of Winter 2018!

We missed a season, but it’s back! Cute characters are the life force that sustains us and we are excited to share with you which characters from this season stole our hearts! So, without further ado, here are our picks!

5.  Hiroe Hannen (Slow Start)

Choosing this fifth spot was a real struggle for me. So many great, cute characters this season, but Hiroe was able to snag the final spot on my list. While I have never had a gap year in school like Hiroe has, I found myself able to relate to some of the other things going on in her life. She’s insecure about her future, unsure of how to properly interact with others and is afraid of putting herself out there. I absolutely adore her for having all of these faults while also having the determination to face them head on, with a little help from her friends. Her upbeat attitude and adorable reactions always left me smiling and rooting for her. She’s a beautiful young woman and I hope I get to see more of her in the future.

4.  Aoi Inuyama (Laid Back Camp)

Choosing just one girl from Laid Back Camp was painful! Rin was my early favorite, and while my love for her never dwindled, Aoi was the one that stole my heart in the end.  Her laid back demeanor and fun sense of humor always had me smiling when she was on screen. Honestly, Aoi is the kind of girl that I would love to date. Everything about her is just pleasant and comforting. The green eyes and cute smile are always a plus too!

3.  Shirase Kobuchizawa (A Place Further than Universe)

If I had to sum up Shirase in one word, I think it would be: Tenacious.  The sincerity with which she tackled the challenge in front of her was unbelievably endearing. She didn’t care what anyone thought of her or her dream and I respect that so much.  What really won me over, though, was her smile. Shirase has the kind of smile that is full of life. Whether mischievous or joyful, when I see that smile my heart skips a beat.  Her journey, and the relationships she develops along the way, drew me in. She went through a hell of a lot and still managed to come out the other end smiling. I love her for that.

2.  Hinata Takahashi (March Comes in like a Lion)

To properly express how much Hina’s (and Akari’s) story means to me, I would need far more space than I have allotted to me here.  Coming into the second season of March Comes in Like a Lion, Hinata wasn’t really a character that I thought I would spend much time thinking about.  However, her arc in this season is one of the more profoundly impactful stories I have ever experienced.  Watching what she goes through left my heart in pieces.  Seeing how she handled her circumstances, well…that destroyed me.  Hina has a heart of gold and the strongest will I’ve ever seen.  Her smile warms my heart and if she were in my life, I would do everything in my power to make sure that she can keep that adorable grin on her face.

1.  Akari Takahashi (March Comes in like a Lion)

I’m going to be straight up with you. Akari is now my favorite character in anime, with Hina joining her in my top 10.  Simply put, she is the most well-rounded and fleshed out character that I have seen, AND she is absolutely, freaking unbelievably gorgeous. Her life story is not one that that is rosy and comfortable. Her mother passed away, her father left their family, their grandpa works his butt off just to keep a roof over her head, but despite all of this, she is able to find joy in life by doing the best she can.  Seeing how Hina’s circumstances affected Akari in the second season, I was heart broken.  She’s not a perfect person and doesn’t know the correct answer about how to handle everything, but her willingness to face her anxieties and do the best for the ones she loves shows her strength of character and her conviction. It’s easy to forget that she’s only 23 years old. I love her so much. Her strength, her personality, her beauty, I love it all and putting her at number 1 on this list and my all time list was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.

5. Zero Two (Darling in the FRANXX)

Brooding, mysterious, and super hot. She may have slipped out of my best girl position, but she’s undeniably awesome. And… She’s horny… :yum:

4. Izumida Touichirou (Yowapeda)

The intense overload of sex appeal on exhibit when presented with not only Izumida, but his left and right pectoral muscles, Andy and Frank, is impossible to ignore. Especially when he breaks out his siren song during particularly intense efforts on the road.

3.Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptor Sakura – Clear Card)

My first 2D crush had to be on this list. Shes just as adorable as ever.

2. Ichigo (Darling in the FRANXX)

Okay, I have switched sides here… I started out on team Zero Two, but I just can’t help but love Ichigo… She’s seriously adorable and sympathetic. She loves stuffed animals too… I mean, what’s not cute about that?

1. Akira Tachibana (After the Rain)

Tachibana is one of the most genuinely attractive anime characters of all time. Not only is she gorgeous but she’s confident and aggressive, an attractive quality we don’t often see in anime females. Serious waifu material here…

5. Kotaro Kashima (School Babysitters)

To be honest a decent chunk of the cast of School Babysitters deserves a spot on this list, but Kotaro takes it for being one of the best younger brother characters in anime. He’s little more than a toddler, but he’s very considerate of Ryuuichi (his older brother) and of those around him. It’s funny that he’s such an endearing character despite the fact that he speaks mostly in (adorable) grunts. The only words you hear him consistently utter are “Nii-chan”, but he still manages to have a surprising amount of depth for a small child character.

4. Rin Shima (Laid Back Camp)

Laid-Back Camp was full of cute characters as well, but Rin stands out to me in this show. She is shy and reserved but she slowly comes into her own during the course of the season, and eventually comes to enjoy spending time with others. In the show her persona is revealed little by little in her hilarious text chats with friends, as she slowly becomes more social through her interest in camping. Added to this is Rin peerless ability to display the joys of being comfy. I never though I would enjoy watching a several instances of a person simply being comfortable and content, but Rin pulls it off.

3. Takagi (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san)

Takagi from Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san is one of the most mischievous characters I’ve seen in a while. She’s witty and she uses her intelligence to mess with Nishikata, but always with the subliminal goal of spending more time with him. Her little pranks and jabs are clear evidence of her affection towards him, and that kind of school yard love makes her all the more cute. Her rare slip-ups are fun to watch as well, as the audience gets a glimpse at a side of Takagi that Nishikata misses. I sincerely hope for another season of this show, if only to watch Takagi try her best to get closer to Nishikata through adorable pranks.

2. Shirase Kobuchizawa (A Place Further Than the Universe)

What to say about Shirase? I’m not going to lie, I’m not done with the series. I have one episode to go as of this writing, and I really don’t want the show to be over.  Shirase is cute to me for similar reasons to Rin. She’s a shy girl, who comes into her own through the course of her show. However, Shirase goes many steps further by realizing her dream, and pushing through her fears. She downplays her capabilities, but when push comes to shove she’s the first one to stand up for her friends. A number of “misty eyed” scenes in the show are attributed to her, and one of the most impactful scenes of the season as well. She’s the cute character you don’t expect to tear your heart out… until she does.

1. Sacchan (Mitsuboshi Colors)

Had this been a weaker season for cute characters, Shirase would have won hands down. However, Mitsuboshi Colors took the cake for cuteness and ran with it this season. An adorable show that depicted a group of girls having fun by playing throughout their town sounds simple, but is executed incredibly here. Though the 3-girl-cast is all amazing in their own right, I have to give cutest character to Sacchan. She’s energetic, cheerful, and a bit too honest at times, and her rambunctious attitude gives life to a lot of the adventures of Colors. Throughout the show I was struck by how well she was depicted as a happy-go-lucky kid, who just wanted to spend her time with her two best friends solving pretend mysteries. I looked forward to every episode to see what Sacchan was going to get up to, and what crazy thing she was going to say. If you haven’t seen Mitsuboshi Colors, then you owe it to yourself to go to Hi-Dive and watch it. If you enjoy comedy, then I promise you’ll enjoy it and Sacchan!

Community Picks:

5. Takagi (Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san)

4. Hinata Miyake (A Place Further Than the Universe)

3. Rin Shima (Laid Back Camp)

2. Nadeshiko Kagamihara (Laid Back Camp)

1. Zero Two (Darling in the FRANXX)

Anime Arcade’s Cutest Character of Winter 2018

Shirase Kobuchizawa (A Place Further Than the Universe)

This was a tough decision. Winter 2018 is the first time where there wasn’t a clear winner. While not on the top of anyone’s list, Shirase’s presence was definitely felt with her being Carlos’s #2 and Logan’s #3.  With an equally heart-warming and heart-wrenching story and one of the best smiles in anime, we’re happy to make her the cutest character from the Winter 2018 anime season!

A HUGE “Thank You” to everyone who voted in the community poll. We love to hear what everyone thinks and it was fun to see how people voted. Look forward to another fun Cutest Character poll for the Spring 2018 season!
